Treating disease with diet
Medical Nutrition Therapy
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is an approach to treating disease with an individually tailored diet which may be created and/or implemented by a registered dietitian nutritionist. Most health professionals would agree that nutrition support is one of, if not the most important initial responses to a chronic disease diagnosis.
Essentially this means that if you are dealing with a chronic condition, nutrition may serve as a key component in supporting the body’s own ability to heal, even if medication is currently helping to manage that condition. Additionally, long-term prescription medication use can contribute to vitamin and mineral deficiencies, which are essential to identify and correct in managing chronic disease.
Medical Nutrition Therapy services at Carolina Functional Nutrition include:
-
Nutrition Assessment: dietary recall, supplement review, symptom survey
-
Labs: vitamins, minerals, inflammatory markers, GI and stool analysis
-
Personalized nutrition plan: diet, supplement, lifestyle recommendations
Research supports MNT as a key intervention for a variety of chronic conditions such as IBS, autism, and certain autoimmune conditions such as Hashimoto’s. And through the functional or integrative approach we practice at Carolina Functional Nutrition, we believe the body has the ability to heal itself if given the right resources. And one of the most powerful resources we have to fight disease is food!
